ADVANCE is a grantmakers’ conference. This means that participation is restricted to JFN members and any non-members who give at least $10,000 a year to disabilities-related causes.
The key elements of eligibility to attend ADVANCE are as follows:
- Participation is open to independent funders; trustees from private, supporting and public foundations; and grantmaking professionals.
- The funder/foundation must be making an annual philanthropic allocation of at least US $10,000. Individuals must be granting this amount personally; trustees or grantmaking professionals must be associated with a foundation that grants at this minimum level.
- Public charities with the primary purpose of allocating or granting funds may register no more than two people, who must be either trustees, the president / executive director, or staff members with grantmaking responsibilities. Staff members who have development responsibility as any part of their work are not eligible to attend.
- Consultants or the part-time staff of a donor must be approved by JFN’s membership staff to participate. Generally, consultants are eligible provided they work as grantmaking professionals, and are not also a paid staff member or development consultant for a non-profit organization. To register, the foundation or donor must send a letter to JFN on foundation stationery identifying the consultant as their representative. (Name badges and participant lists will identify the registrant as representing that foundation/donor.) Please contact JFN’s membership staff for more information.
- People who individually make the requisite philanthropic allocation or are trustees of eligible organizations, but who also serve as the paid staff of ineligible organizations (nonprofits, philanthropy/fundraising consultancies) may not attend unless authorized by JFN.
- Trustees of donor-advised funds and supporting funds managed by public charities that are not yet granting $10,000 may join JFN or attend the conference if the fund contains minimum assets of US $500,000.
